Why There Should Never be Movie Award Ceremonies

Im sitting here watching the 69th Golden Globes and I cant help but feel that the entire award show is some warped cruel joke. A joke being played on the actors directors and all the movie makers. They get together, all dressed up with their acceptance speeches already prepared, anxiously awaiting recognition. All they want is some respect for the hard work they put into their art, but no one knows who will be recognized. All anyone knows is who has the possibility of winning. Its like a game show, and like most game shows in the end the vast majority lose. These artists who are nervous and hopeful are crushed and then held to the strictest code of civility. They are only allowed to show the tiniest bit of sadness; a downcast look or a maybe a sigh. After all millions of people are watching! So they are forced to clap and smile for those that beat them. Its a cruel thing to do to people, yet year after year these hopeful fools turn up when they are nominated.

Then there are those who do win. They get a trophy and half a minute to say something meaningful, then quickly ushered off the stage. Its an assembly line of smiling and crying winners. They give so much time for the host to crack jokes about the movies they're there to honor. The people who actually create and star in these movies; the people who are supposedly being honored are forced to sum up their thanks and inspiration into 30 seconds. One of the winners (I think the writer for The Artist) was explaining in his speech how important the film was to him. He was telling the audience how he wrote it to honor his father who had died only a few years ago, and it was one of his father's wishes that silent film would once again appear on the big screen. It was very touching, that is until the music started to play over his speech, stopping the writer mid-sentence. He looked insulted as he was hurried off the stage. They fast-forward the one place where humanity and feeling has a role in the ceremonies; diminishing it to next to nothing for the sake of television ratings. Therefore making these ceremonies nothing more than a stunt for TV... nothing more meaningful than a game show.
